Io toglierei "Per esempio" nell'ultimo periodo, in italiano non rende
molto bene tutta la frase insieme così.

Magari:
Specificare un programma esterno o uno script da eseguire alla
ricezione o all'invio di un messaggio oppure quando si verifica un
errore.
