Ovviamente con Linux si intende il kernel. I programma che ci 'girano attorno' solitamente sono Free software, ma non solo.
In genere si indica GNU/Linux per intendere Linux con software libero. Questo vale per certe distro ad es Debian GNU/linux...che più di tutte si basa su free sw o RH (poi puoi usare anche sw non free) e che quindi ti mettono(o ti possono mettere) a disposizione un SO totalmente free. Altre distro non possono essere considerate GNU/Linux. Ad esempio SUSE che utilizza come base della sua distro Yast che non è free sw.

Dire XFree/GNU/linux non aggiunge nulla dato che XFree è free sw. 
Non mi sembra una gran critica quindi....
