Visto che ormai wka28 è un debian user il file di configurazione è
proprio /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Per aggiungere 1400x1050 ti basta
aggiungere la stringa nelle modalita' di depth che ti interessano. Penso
che di default anche tu abbia " DefaultDepth    24 ". 

Esempio:

 
SubSection "Display"
           Depth           16
           Modes           "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960"        
EndSubSection

SubSection "Display"
           Depth           24
           Modes           "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1024x768"
