 conftest* sono file temporanei di "configure". cerca dentro i configure 
un 
cat > conftest.s1 <<EOF

 I configure, a meno che tu non ti sia messo a rigenerarli con l'autoconf,
sono "fissi", e quindi non dovrebbero "soffrire" di cambiamenti di altre
cose: rimangono sed e la shell.
