Era hosts.deny, che, probabilmente per errore della distro, e' quello del
  livello di sicurezza "paranoico"; non c'era invece nessuna regola
  in iptables.

Altro problemino; ho una fire GL1000 8 Mb, riconosciuta in fase
  di installazione, che fa partire KDE, ma appena lancio una applicazione,
  ne visualizza la finestra a pezzi e pianta la tastiera ed il KDE, ma non 
il mouse.
