Qualche redhattista ti rispondera' sicuramente meglio di me.

Per quanto ne so:
- Redhat si e' inventata un gcc 2.96 (che dovrebbe portare al 3.0).
- Con questo gcc non si riesce a compilare il kernel.
- Se hai una Redhat (mi MARAVIGLIEREI!), devi sostituire tutte le occorrenze
di gcc con kgcc (kernel-gcc) che e' il gcc 2.95, dato che RH se ne esce sia
con gcc che con kgcc.

Ti chiederai il perche' di tutto cio':

Use kgcc (the kernel building gcc). The mainstream kernel is still abusing a
few things the new gcc catches out. And yes its not documented well enough

In fact the idea of distributing a different compiler for kernels comes from 
debian and the kgcc naming convention from Conectiva.!
