i686 non corrisponde al PIII?
Al boot RH 8 mi riporta circa questo:
Red Hat 8 2.4.18-14 (Pysche) on i686
(ho un PIII 800)

Io capisco che il kernel della RH 8 supporta il modulo ntfs ...
ma, come ho postato prima:

[root@localhost root]# modprobe ntfs
modprobe: Can't locate module ntfs
