Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop edition AMD 64: aggiornamenti software e XAMPP

ciao a tutti/e,

sono un neofita di Linux e vorrei chiedervi alcuni suggerimenti.

Ho installato su una macchina dove c'era già Windows Vista/XP una partizione
con Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition AMD 64.
La situazione delle partizioni è la seguente:

Partizione A: Windows XP (ca. 50 Gb)
Partizione B: Dati (ca. 50 Gb)
Partizione C: Ubuntu 8.10 (ca. 50 Gb)

*Primo suggerimento:

E' possibile scaricare gli aggiornamenti del software tramite

- Amministrazione -> Gestore Aggiornamenti
- Amministrazione -> Gestore pacchetti Synaptic

senza avere un IP statico, lavorando all'interno di una rete aziendale e
impostando manualmente il parametro *http proxy *con la porta e  senza
autenticazione?

L'errore che ricevo è dalla funzione :

Impossibile scaricare alcune file di indice, essi verranno ignorati, oppure
si useranno quelli precedenti.

Le sorgenti sofware sono tutte selezionate ovvero: main, multiverse,
restricted e universe. Ed anche le due third party software.

E' possibile installare XAMPP su Ubuntu 8.10 AMD 64 Desktop Edition
manualmente ?

Ho scaricato XAMPP dalla rete e poi ho cercato di installarlo sul pc senza
fortuna perchè

*"XAMPP is currently only availably as 32 bit application*. *Please use a 32
bit compatibility library*"

Allora ho scaricato dalla rete le librerie a 32 bit *
ia32-libs_2.2ubuntu18_amd64.**deb* e qui mi sono fermato perchè non conosco
il comando per installare le librerie.
