boh forse ho trovato il problema
sembra che che in effetti mysql funzioni

root@grop:~ # mysqladmin -S /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock  -p ping
Enter password:
mysqld is alive

solo che devo indicargli sempre il "sock" altrimenti

root@grop:~ # mysqladmin   -p ping
Enter password:
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'
(2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!

pensate che questo possa dare problemi con Joomla? ( che comunque continua a
darmi nwll'installazione "username e password errati").

sempre a proposito di "username e password errati"  googolando ho scoperto
che potrebbe essere un problema di formato delle pw,
una soluzione consigliata e':
