i tried to send the following message, but it was rejected by the mail
server at lists.linux.it because it was too big - which was quite
reasonable. i wasn't too happy about sending such a large attachment to a
list anyway.
i suspect there a let of repeated stuff in the strace log, but i don't
know anything at all about C, so i couldn't really edit it.
what can i do about this?
original message follows (without attachments!!!)
thanks

hi!
alright. here's the proper strace results - as an attachment, because
they're pretty long. i don't normally send attachments (or such large
emails to mailing lists, so apologies for this, to anyone it
inconveniences, but it's probably better than sending the whole thing
included in the message text!
anyway, this time, gpm worked and i played with it for a while, just kinda
random selecting and pasting, until the console froze. sorry the strace
log is so long, but it's a major hassle for me to be able to log into the
laptop remotely (have to borrow monitor and keyboard from another computer
in the house, which is in use at the moment) and all i could really do was
do a "sleep 10m ; killall gpm" on another vt. i gave it 10min because you
can never be sure how long it will take to freeze the console, although
it's usually less than that.
this time, as well as freezing the console, i noticed it had somehow
messed up my ethernet connection (pcmcia card). it did this some time
before the console froze. i haven't included the dmesg because it's full
of lines which are identical and say the following:
eth0: Too much work at interrupt, status 0x20
the kernel obviously only keeps a certain number of lines (or bytes) of
dmesg and everything else was obliterated.
the attached section of my /var/log/daemon ("gpm_syslog") includes an
example of what was written to the system log during the same time. again,
the messages were repeated hundreds of times.
to restore the pcmcia to working condition, i had to eject and re-insert
it. it's working fine now.
i hope all this is of some use. please let me know if you need more
information.
thanks
