The X type1 rasterizer was working well since X11R5.
If the bitmap fonts were removed (we even have cursor.pfa these days)
and the times/helvetica/courier(+fixed+cursor) was installed,
then you had WYSIWYG even at those ancient times. Don't ask
me why people have not used that. Probably because of the font
copyrights, but even now the 'lyx' program doesn't really use
the free bluesky AMS type1 fonts. And i must tell everybody
who is using Openoffice today, to install ms fonts to get the
proper font metrics in word/powerpoint/excel files.
Why nobody has adjusted the URW "adobe standard" fonts
to have "microsoft" metrics and put them into default
installation is really beyond my understanding.
I'm already really sick of hearing "openoffice is shit, because it can't
properly display my word/powerpoint/excel files".
