# apt-cache search libsdl
dovrebbe darti un botto di risultati. se non lo fa,  verifica se hai tutti i 
repository in 
/etc/apt/sources.list

il mio, opportunamente greppato con
# egrep -v '^#|^$' /etc/apt/sources.list
