May be, I'm thinking about.
I asked for PCL, because I was thinking at barcode as library functions,
that I can use inside my applications for mixed ouput (i.e. text + barcodes
+ ...), and a filter like gs can add some
problems, but may be you are right.

Altougth "gs" way may be the quickest,  I think that "easiest" is
application related, so PCL output may be a useful extension,
