il problema è che manca proprio x...
non so come si chiamino sotto Ubuntu ma se sono come in debian
devi aver installato i pacchetti xserver-xorg e xserver-common

vedi se li hai con 'dpkg -l |grep xserver' ed eventualmente
installali
