Ubuntu sì e Debian no ??

Ciao a tutti,
C'è in lista qualche anima buona disposta ad aiutare un neofita 55enne imbranato?
Su un PC auto-assemblato (basato su processore AMD ATHLON 64 bit X2 4200 socket AM2, scheda madre ABIT modello KN9S, 1024 Mb di RAM DDR2 Corsair, scheda video CLUB Radeon X300SE PCI-Express e disco fisso SEAGATE Barracuda) ho installato UBUNTU 6.06 LTS per PC a 64 bit: nessun problema,funziona tutto a meraviglia.  Subito dopo ho provato a formattare il disco e installare Debian Sarge: fallimento! Non sono riuscito nemmeno ad installare il sistema di base. Dopo aver rinunciato a configurare il network (scegliendo l'opzione "Do not configure the network at this time") mi sono illuso di andare avanti con l'installazione, ma il sistema si è piantato dicendomi "NO PARTITIONABLE MEDIA", e poi "No partionable media were found. Please check that a hard disk is attached to that machine". Non capisco. Certo che c'è un disco fisso attaccato alla macchina! altrimenti Ubuntu come avrebbe potuto funzionare?!
