[gpm]gpm error Transport endpoint is not connected

I receive this error at 1032 in gpm.c under gpm 1.19.6  I'm guessing
that I'm missing something in my kernel, but so far I haven't found it. 
I'm using a PS/2 mouse, psaux.  Any thing seem obvious?
