[Gulli] usb bootabile con partizione persistente

per mio fratello che vive in altra città vorrei preparare una penna USB bootabile con partizione 
persistente
solo che ubuntu 16.04 si comporta diversamente dalle versioni precedenti e i soliti tool tipo 
unetbootin non funzionano, ma solo:   sudo ddrescue -d -D --force  image.iso   /dev/sdX

e poi non riesco a gestire una partizione "persistence"  o "casper-rw"  da  syslinux/isolinux
infatti:
/dev/sdc contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table.  However, it does not have a 
valid fake msdos partition table, as it should.  Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program 
that doesn't understand GPT partition tables.  Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now 
using an msdos partition table.  Is this a GPT partition table?

e si ritorna all'annoso problema: esiste un soft gnu che gestisca GPT ?  Perché né gparted né 
partitionmanager mi trovano partizioni GPT
