[Primipassi] wireless & WPA

Ciao!
Sto cercando di utilizzare un router wireless, ma senza successo. Il
problema è (o mi sembra che sia) l'utilizzo del protocollo WPA.
Ho installato wpasupplicant e letto un po' di documentazione.
Il mio sistema è una Debian Etch con kernel 2.6.15-1-686.
Sembra (/usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/README.Debian) che la
configurazione consista solo nel modificare /etc/network/interfaces.
Così ho fatto (tentando diverse varianti). Nel mio
/etc/network/interfaces ho aggiunto:
iface eth1 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid NETGEAR
wpa-proto WPA
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-psk "********"
ottenendo, al lancio di ifup -v eth1:

Non so se c'è un problema reale o se, per ignoranza, sbaglio qualcosa di
banale.
Con dmesg trovo:
