Hi all,
we're moving fast to provide you a stable version of ArcheOS 4 "Caesar"
before the end of this spring. The work is hard, our (regular) job always
present, but we're now trying to freeze all ideas and move on with
packaging/testing/configurations.
First of all the software list: the one on the ArcheOS website (
http://www.archeos.eu/wiki/doku.php?id=info) is a little bit obsolete. We've
added some new software and removed other, so by the end of this week we'll
have a really definitive list. Obviously you can integrate it writing us
your suggestions and opinions (better to use the ML).
Once the software list is completed we'll start packaging. This means not
only that all the software included in ArcheOS 4 will be in .deb format but
also that will have some features and configurations specifically for
archaeologist, and maybe one day could be included also into the official
Debian repositories.
At the end of packaging, a first beta will be released. You all are invited
to test it, although it could have some quite serious bug, in order to be
sure that all peripherals and software works correctly (the more hardware we
test, more happiness to our users!)
While tests are running all the documentation used for previous versions
will be updated and new wrote, considering also the idea to include some
"example data" to get acquainted with the specialized software.

A particular thank to Denis Francisci that is currently doing a great job
with the R packages.

Ciao a tutti,
ci stiamo impegnado al massimo della velocita' per fornirvi una versione
stabile di ArcheOS 4 "Caesar" prima della fine della primavera. Il compito
e' arduo, il nostro (vero) lavoro sempre in agguato ma stiamo ora cercando
di fissare tutte le idee e procedere con
pacckettizzazione/testing/configurazioni.
Prima di tutto la lista dei programmi installati su ArcheOS: quella presente
sul sito ufficiale (http://www.archeos.eu/wiki/doku.php?id=info) e'
leggermente obsoleta. Abbiamo aggiunto nuovi programmi e rimosso degli
altri; per la fine di questa settimana avremo un elenco davvero definitivo.
Ovviamente siamo in attesa di vostri suggerimenti e opinioni in merito
(meglio se in ML).
Una volta che la lista sara' completa cominceremo la pacchettizzazione.
Quest significa non solo che tutto il software incluso in ArcheOS 4 sara' in
formato .deb ma anche che avra' configurazioni ed estensioni specifiche per
l'archeologia, e forse un giorno potrebbe essere incluso nei repository
ufficiali Debian.
Finito il processo di pacchettizzazione verra' rilasciata una prima versione
beta. Siete tutti invitatia  provarla anche se potrebbe avere dei bug piu' o
meno gravi, per essere sicuri che tutte le periferiche e i programmi
funzionino come dovrebbero (piu' hardware diverso viene testato, piu' siamo
felici!).
Mentre verranno eseguiti i test tutta la documentazione usata nelle versioni
precedenti verra' aggiornata e nuove guide verranno scritte, considerando
anche l'idea di inserire files di esempio per prendere confidenza con il
software specializzato.

Un ringraziamento particolare a Denis Francisci che sta facendo in questi
giorni un ottimo lavoro su R.
