Please don't fix mev. Fix libgpm (and possibly gpm if a new mechanism
is needed for sth and root access is required). The problem is in gpm
clients that do not work any more.

If you fix mev you need to fix the documentation, switch to 2.0
(incompatible with 1.x) and wait for all maintainers of gpm-clients to
update their client code.  Definitely not a shiny future :)

If you fix libgpm you'd better document that gpm client did not work
with version such-and-such if devfs if used. Then the issue will be
over.
