[gpm]mouse on console

The first thing to do is check in your logs for any error messages from
gpm.  That will give a starting point of where your problem is.  Perhaps
your device file in /dev has the wrong permissions, or doesn't exist,
Could be specifying the wrong mouse type, etc...  Could be any number of
things really.
