[Primipassi] help for setup linux

Salve a tutti. Sono  Gianfranco e vorrei entrare nel mondo Linux.
Purtroppo ho incontrato subito dei problemi : in fase di installazione il 
programma fips mi comunica:

Checking boot sector........OK
Checking FAT..................OK
Searching for free space....OK

Error : Last cylinder is not free
Since the new partition is created at the end  of the old one and  contains at least one 
cylinder, the partition can not be split if not at least the very last cylinder is completely free.
Probably there is a hidden file like 'image .idx' or 'miror sav' in the last cylinder - see  the doc.

Non sapendo come provvedere ho tentato  lo stesso l'installazione  tramite setup da CDROM con 
autoboot.bat ma il messaggio che ricevo è :  
ran out  of input data   System halted
A questo punto non so dove mettere le mani.
Sarò molto grato a colui che pazientemente vorrà dedicarmi un pò del suo tempo per farmi uscire da 
questo primo intoppo.  thanks  a presto.
