[Primipassi] Problemi con lettore CD

Salve a tutti!

Vi scrivo questa mail perchè ho un problema piuttosto fastidioso, che di fatto mi impedisce di usare il computer!
Sarò breve: ho appena sostituito il lettore cd-rom (prima avevo un 4x, probabilmente risalente al paleozoico), ma non riesco a farlo funzionare! O meglio, funziona perfettamente sotto Windows (ho installato Win e Linux in dual boot), ma non viene gestito dal pinguino. Se tento di montare il dispositivo, appare la classica finestra con la croce cerchiata (che ricorda gli inquietanti e innumerevoli crash delle finestre dello zio Bill) accompagnata dal seguente messaggio:

Mount:/dev/cdrom non è un dispositivo di blocchi valido.

Ho provato a "mettere le mani" nel file etc/fstab, pensando che fosse un problema di configurazione del dispositivo. Ho provato a sostituire nella riga corrispondente al lettore cd, al posto di 'auto', 'iso9660', credendo che il problema potesse essere quello, ma senza successo.
Quello che mi pare inquietante, è che Linux vede il lettore all'avvio, come testimonia il listato del file boot.msg che ho riportato più avanti.
Ho consultato in proposito la documentazione in mio possesso ("Linux Manual" di Peter Norton e "Linux Facile" di Daniele Medri), ma non mi è stata di grande aiuto. Qualcuno può aiutarmi?

P.S.
Dimenticavo: il lettore in questione è un LG 52X, mentre il sistema su cui dovrebbe girare, è composto da un K6-II 300 MHz montato su di una scheda madre Tyan Trinity 100 con 64 Mb di RAM.
Non è un granchè, ma è quello che passa il convento...	;-)
La distribuzione Linux è invece la Suse 7.1 con Kernel 2.4
